For many who have visited Italy during the colder months, cioccolata calda, or hot chocolate, is one of their fondest memories. And with excellent reason.
Comprised of milk, sugar, a thickening agent like flour or corn starch, and, of course, chocolate (often in the form of cocoa powder), hot chocolate in Italy has nothing to do with the watery, sippable kind that you may have had elsewhere. For those who haven't had the privilege, hot chocolate in Italy and many parts of Europe is thick, almost the consistency of pudding, and the way to enjoy it is with a small spoon, one delicious mouthful at a time. Just be careful as it's quite hot!
In Italy, you can buy pre-made mixes such as Cameo's Ciobar so you can make your own cioccolata calda at home without having to go to the bar, but it's actually not difficult to make from scratch either.
Here for your viewing and culinary pleasure, is a video of an Italian making cioccolata calda on the stove top--in English!
So now you have no excuse for not making Italian hot chocolate at home.
Do you remember your first experience with cioccolata calda in Italy? Please share!
Hot Chocolate in Italy
My love affair with Italian drinking chocolate began in Citta’di Castello on a piazza near the Hotel Tifferno (one of my favorite places to stay when I’m traveling in Umbria). It was deep, dark, thick and creamy and unforgettable, with a head of cream (con panna) that rivaled a fine Guinness.
My First Italian Hot Chocolate
My 1st experience of Italian hot chocolate was in Venice, Feb 2009, during Carnivale! HEAVEN!! And the search began for learning how to make it at home.
My first cioccolata calda
I was in the US Navy, onboard the USS Grayling (SSN646) I was with my shipmates in La Maddalena, in 1982, they ordered coffee. I am not a coffee drinker, it was a cool day I ordered a "hot chocolate" imagine my suprise when I recieved the thick and delicious cioccolata calda! It was love at first bite!
I was born and raised in
I was born and raised in South Africa by my Italian mother. At the age of 20 my mother and I made a trip to Tortona, Italy so I could meet my relatives for the very first time. After a bombardment of kissing and hugging and lots of tears, our newly reunited family settled down to a hot drink by the kitchen table- Ciobar! I think I had a cup every day until we left, aaaah! Good memories.
Cioccolata Calda
I had my first cup of Ciaccolata Calda while in Venice last year and couldn't get enough. I love it! I'll be leaving for a 2-week visit to Italy next week and can't wait for my next cup. I also intend to purchase some packets in the supermarket to take home with me.

Hope you enjoy your stay and cioccolata calda, Philip :)
My first experience with Italian hot chocolate...
In a small town called Roncglione, about this time last year. It was after their own version of the Palio races during Carnevale, and we all crowded into a bar to get warm after they were over. We had cioccolata calda con panna (whipped cream)!
And I quote:
"Following the race, I had the best cup of hot cocoa EVER made, pretty much pure chocolate topped with pure cream, hehe. I also bought £8 worth of Carnevale candy (nuts and dried bananas and such), unintentionally of course."

Now you have me wanting a cioccolata calda *right* now. Thanks for sharing your memories Amy!
Re: Mmmmmm
No problem, I had to go make some myself, although I just did it with warm milk and didn't add anything to thicken it up. I really love your blog and wish I was back in Italy! Following Italy Mag on Twitter now...
