Take a train along a valley, over gorges and waterfalls into Switzerland and return by boat at sunset.
The surrounding hills give you the opportunity of a cable car above the lake or walk on the only growing glacier in Italy at the foot of the mighty Mount Rosa, where the Walser people settled so many years ago. From Lake Maggiore, there is also the possibility to visit the Queen of the Alps in a day: Zermatt and The Matterhorn in Switzerland.
Milan and the shopping outlets are not far away.
Lake Orta nearby is an absolute jewel. The ancient village of Orta with its little island of Saint Julius opposite and the sacred hillside just above. Just south of Lake Orta the countryside is also very well known for its vineyards and excellent wine.
If you are more energetic there are numerous walks in the hills and the mountains, rock climbing, rafting, mountain biking, water-skiing and many other sports.
